North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently used a 95-foot (29m) Princess yacht to navigate the country’s east coast during a 10-day official tour, according to NK News. If the yacht — a gleaming £4.5 million (S$5.6 million) vessel — is a recent purchase, it could be in violation of United Nations (UN) sanctions on the procurement of “luxury goods” by the North Korean government.
Sales of luxury goods to the North was prohibited by the UN in 2006 in an attempt to squeeze the country over its nuclear programme. However, the vague language of the ban left open loopholes regarding the interpretation of “luxury goods”. Earlier this year, a specific prohibition on luxury cars and yachts was added.
The vessel was spotted during a May visit to a fishery station that was covered by the state media. During an inspection of the facility, the starboard side of a large luxury yacht was captured in a May 28 KCNA photo of Mr Kim and his generals walking along the docks. Yacht industry sources quoted by NK News said the model appeared to be a Princess 95MY. An updated version of the yacht, the Princess 98MY, can cost more than £5.6 million. The Daily Telegraph
