Lexis for Microsoft Office Now Works With Lexis Advance

Lexis for Microsoft Office legal drafting software now integrates with Lexis Advance research system. Although LMO still works with the first generation system, Lexis.com, the new version takes advantage of Lexis Advance's customized search tools and results management features to facilitate document review and validation and speed document creation.

LexisNexis Legal & Professional designed LMO to streamline the workflow necessary to create and review documents in Microsoft Office and improve the quality of work product embedded in Microsoft Word and Outlook. LMO users can make use of research content from LexisNexis and the internet inside their drafting tools, comparable to Thomson Reuters' Drafting Assistant. The integration with Lexis Advance software and content now gives users more options to search and retrieve relevant content directly inside their work product.

LMO has evolved since its debut in 2010. The first version surfaced Lexis.com content into Outlook and Word. In 2011, Lexis added workflow tools to Shepardize and validate documents, convert Word documents to PDF, use the history map in Office, and pin items that supported research to email messages. In 2012, Lexis added citation format verification for the Bluebook and California and New York style manuals and added the ability to generate tables of authorities.

The access to Lexis Advance content and software features brings further depth to the LMO offering with expanded search capabilities, refined filtering, in-document navigation and additional delivery options, allowing users to quickly hone in on the research necessary to complete their legal documents.

While reviewing a document, an LMO user can import Shepard's signals into a draft and review case citations quickly and efficiently. One click on the Shepard's signal brings up the report inside Office for review. See Figure 1.

While searching for content to include in a document, the new LMO can take advantage of Lexis Advance's search filters to hone and review search results to include or exclude from further review. See Figure 2 and 3.

Other features in the new Lexis for Microsoft Office include:

• Expanded content in Lexis Advance offers additional content types from sources such as Jury Verdicts & Settlements, Expert Witness Analysis, and administrative materials, codes, and regulations.

• Additional search features: Users can toggle between natural language and terms-connectors searches as well as include search term synonyms and equivalents in complex searches.
