Legion playoffs roundup: Top seed Latrobe rolls to win

Dylan Hall scored the eventual game-winning run on an infield hit by John Saunders, and No. 1 Latrobe defeated West Hempfield, 9-2, in Game 1 of the District 31 American Legion semifinals Friday at Legion-Keener Park. Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lint Field.

Winning pitcher Jonathan Kolling allowed four hits. Latrobe broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning. Seth Holler opened the inning with a triple, and Hall added a two-run triple later in the inning.

“Obviously winning the first game is huge,” Latrobe manager Jason Bush said. “It gives us a cushion, but we can't relax. They are a quality team and we know what we have to do.”

Hempfield East 4, Unity 1 — At Whitney Field, winning pitcher Corey Marshall's two-run double in the top of the seventh highlighted a four-run inning and helped Hempfield East defeat No. 2 Unity. Game 2 will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hempfield High School.

Nolan Beresford tied the score with a single to plate Tyler Fink, who walked. Luke Fox followed Fink with a double off the glove the center fielder Ray Sowinski. After Beresford's hit, Brad Appleby was intentionally walked and Marshall doubled to left. Fox had two hits for Hempfield East, while Blake Reeping and Eli Imbrogno had two hits for Unity.

“Getting a win here was huge,” Hempfield East manager Tom Beresford said. “This was a typical game for us, we'd have one big inning or one bad inning. Corey came up big.”

Junior Legion

Murrysville 6, Greensburg 1 — Winning pitcher Casen Wolinsky allowed two hits and struck out 11 to help Murrysville earn a win in the opening round of the Westmoreland Junior Legion playoffs. Joe Kegerreis, Ben Ramey and Wolinsky had RBI in a three-run first inning. Game 2 of the best-of-three series is 10 a.m. Saturday at Lynch Field.

Hempfield East 8, Kiski Valley 7 (8 innings) — Cole Reese singled home Scott Riley with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth and Hempfield East rallied from a 7-0 deficit to win Game 1. Mitch Golden had two hits for Hempfield East, and Jake Allison keyed a three-run sixth with a hit. Game 2 is noon Saturday at Freeport Community Park.

West Hempfield 8, PAL 1 — A.J. Bove hit a three-run triple in the first inning to lead West Hempfield to a Game 1 victory. Justin Liberty earned the victory after allowing one unearned run on three hits in six innings while striking out two. Game 2 is 3 p.m. Saturday at Shafton.
