International Day of the Girl: What’s next?

Women's rights

Celebrating an annual event like the International Day of the Girl is important. It’s important because it educates and shows us ways to make the world a better place.

The big problem is that it only lasts 24 hours. And for many, it becomes a vague memory the next day.

“What will motivate us to act,” activist Kavita Dogra asks. “Many of us have heard, read or seen these numbers but if you’re lucky enough to live in Canada like I do, it’s really easy to ignore them.”

What numbers is she talking about? Here is a very short list from her article:

700 million women and girls live in poverty around the world.65 million girls do not have access to primary or secondary education.39,000 girls are at risk of marrying too young every day.

As a human being, I feel that we are not doing enough. We need to stop talking and start implementing real solutions. And Kavita agrees:

“Support does not translate into money or at least it doesn’t have to.  There are numerous ways to make a difference including using your voice to raise awareness which can be done in person or on social media. You can volunteer, donate, raise money by doing walks, throw fundraising parties, have a good old bake sale or even rock some charity clothing! Sounds easy enough, doesn’t it?”
