New Harris tweed jacket

Join DateNovember 7th, 2012LocationNorthants, EnglandPosts801Default New Harris tweed jacket

I last had a Harris tweed jacket in my early 20s, which is quite a while. I really like Harris tweed, so I asked Mears to make me one. They sent me various swatches to choose from, I ordered it in the middle of April and it was delivered this afternoon.

I'm pleased with it - they made me a hacking jacket last year, using as the pattern a jacket I had had made a few years earlier by a now defunct tailor, and they just copied the original both times.

The photos are rather poor and don't really do the coat or the tweed justice. This is the coat straight out of the box, it could do with being pressed.

Any reason you did not go for RTW? There should be plenty around. Haggas still has lots.

My height for one thing - I'm 6'6" (and getting on for 16 stone) so RTW is never quite long enough. Mears' prices are very reasonable in any case and I like to decide various details which with RTW would just be pot luck.

^ Fair enough. 40R would be no use to you and sizes at either end of average are often an issue.

That is one fine looking jacket. I can't tell from your photos: did Mears give the lapels a swelled-edge? I'm eagerly anticipating a selection of swatches from them. Glad to hear of the fast turnover, too. I'm still waiting for a jacket ordered from that other place on your side of the pond. I was hoping a December 1 order would mean I would get to wear it this season, but apparently not.

When it arrived, I remembered that my last one, which was a similar colour, had swelled-edge lapels and then I wondered why I hadn't specified the same, but I'm pleased with them as they are.
Now is almost certainly a less busy time of year for ordering tweed sports jackets.

Very smart Sir. Any chance of a close-up on the tweed? How would you describe the colour in 'real life', as it were?

Also given your height do you have adjustments made for proportion e.g. are those pocket flaps deeper than one would normally expect and in order to provide a balanced appearance?

Congratulations on your purchase! I imagine that you are a very happy chappy right now.

Thank you Shaver. Here is a close-up:

It's a sort of dark clouds over a peat bog colour, it reminds me of a tabby cat we once had.

I didn't specify deeper flaps or anything of that nature - I would think you would have to go to Savile Row for that sort of subtlety, although I might be wrong. Mears call themselves 'bespoke' but MTM is nearer the mark. But that's fine for a simple sports jacket.

It's lifted my mood certainly - I wanted something presentable for a visit I have planned for the weekend.

Wow! That is such a subtle colouration - simply gorgeous. You'll be cutting quite the dash on your visit.

Congrats on your new and very handsome jacket! The tweed is sublime up close and such an excellent illustration of what Harris Tweed is all about.

I've been considering putting in an order with Mears myself and seeing your new acquisition makes that all the more likely.

^ Thank you. If you're considering Harris tweed, Mears have a good selection of samples to choose from - tweeds that do not appear on their website. You have to have the tweed in your hand to get the full effect. I had quite a hard time deciding. Also bear in mind that Harris tweeds come in different weights - I prefer the heavier ones, but it's a matter of choice.

Interesting to know that they have a greater selection than what's shown on the site. Of course, that just makes actually choosing something even harder, especially as I suffer from morbid indecisiveness in matters such as these. As far as the tweed goes, I'm fairly certain I'll opt for a regular one. I already own nine or ten Harris Tweed jackets, so while I'd love yet another one, I really ought not to.
