Shipton & Heneage Wholecuts?

Fellow forumgoers,

I've been considering a pair of wholecuts as my next shoe purchase; while I'm aware that some members here find the style disconcerting or out of keeping with more traditional designs, the image of them has captivated me. (Most of my other shoes are quite conservatively styled - PA style captoes with and without brogueing, and some medallion or perforated plaintoes, all oxfords.)

I found a small variety of whole cuts at Shipton and Heneage (http://www.shipton-usa.com/mens-shoes/mens-wholecut-shoes.html), and the chestnut and brown both look promising. However, I've never purchased English shoes before, and had not heard of Shipton until today. A search of the forums revealed a couple of bare reviews (mainly regarding service); is there anyone who would care to comment on the quality, style, or price of these? Is there another wholecut available in the $200-400ish price range that I should be considering?

I love wholecuts. I don't care what anyone here says.

I wish I could give you some recommendations either for or against Shipton, but I have no experience.

I do think that it's critical for the shoes to fit you well, so that they live up to your expectations, and so that you will be encouraged to wear them.

I just bought a pair of Ferragamo wholecuts that I love. I was able to try them on and find the perfect fit while in Chicago. They were a bit more, but worth it.

Good luck! I hope you find shoes you love and wear often. And ignore any naysayers!

Shipton and Heneage's English made (They also sell Italian made.) shoes are high quality shoes made by quality Northampton manufacturers. I have a pair from them made by Alfred Sargent. They are fine shoes and were a good value. I believe the shoes that interest you are being made by Cheaney, also a quality Northampton maker. S&H do a good job of interpolating U.S. sizes into the proper UK size for last of the shoe that you purchase.

Their prices for these shoes are good value, as you could easily pay more. The style is contemporary, I.e., somewhat elongated. It's fine if that's what you want, but I prefer a more traditional rounded last. But there's nothing wrong with it. I would assume good quality calf and solid Northampton quality throughout.

Other options for English quality include -

You might find you get a little more bang for your buck from one of these, but perhaps a little less expert assistance with your size. Good service from all.
